2009 Winners
University of Derby - Career Development Centre
The Careers Development Centre at The University of Derby have been Accredited to the Standard since 2005.
Although the organisation has been Accredited for some years, they have continued to use the Standard to guide them to enhance and change their ways of working.
The Career Development Centre instigated a campaign to take their service to the students, following relocation of the service to a different area within the University. The Standard guided the team to ensure that their service be proactively promoted which led to a number of initiatives to raise their profile for example, on-line careers guidance, virtual careers fairs, career cafes and a re-branding exercise. The re-branding exercise caused the team to challenge the corporate branding and seeking a more tailored sub-brand ‘your future, our job’ using the Standard as a lever to enable this change.
The Standard encouraged the service to review its staff development processes. They developed improved new staff inductions, and they implemented what originally was peer observation for careers advisers. Following consultation with staff, this was changed to ‘peer learning’ and was broadened to include all CDC staff. This ensured that the focus of this activity was on learning, both for the person being observed and also the observed. This has led to a very different perception of this activity, which has been welcomed by staff.
